October 20, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

The Morrisville State College athletics department conducted their second annual Back to School Drive through the end of September, donating just over 2,000 collected school supply items for the students in the Morrisville-Eaton Central School District.

The items were presented Monday morning to the teachers, staff and students at the Edward R. Andrews Elementary School during their Character Education assembly.

Student-athlete representation from women’s ice hockey, softball, women’s basketball, volleyball, football and the men’s soccer team assisted in delivering supplies as they were applauded for their efforts on character, civility and service to the community.

Great Hollow helps to combat cancer

October 20, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District held its fifth annual Coaches vs. Cancer event on Oct. 13. Each year, the coaches plan a day for the school teams to host a game, and students and faculty are invited to watch them participate in various after-school sports. It is a schoolwide effort to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

Thanks to the help of the PTA, student and adult volunteers, the event raised close to $2,400. Donations came from students, teachers, staff and parents.

More than 275 student-athletes took to the fields to compete – including football, field hockey and boys and girls soccer – and another 250 students came out to support the cause. The cheerleaders and kickline performed during halftime at the football game. The cross-country and girls tennis teams helped to collect donations from spectators.

“The entire school showed great support and amazing spirit to help make this event successful,” said organizer and coach Colleen McKillop. “The coaches praised all the student-athletes for their efforts on the field, as well as their choice to be involved in a very important cause. Cancer claims millions of lives each year, and the Great Hollow family wanted to do something to combat that. We believe every little bit helps.”

Members of Connolly School’s student council organized the school’s seventh annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk-a-Thon on Oct. 14.
Dressed in pink for the event, students and faculty walked around the school building perimeter with colorful banners and signs they created to raise awareness.
In all, the students collected $835 through pledges. The funds will be donated to Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S, a not-for-profit agency that provides assistance to residents of Glen Cove and neighboring communities coping with the crisis of cancer.
